The Public Service Announcement (PSA) video contest gave Nebraska high school students the chance to make a real impact by promoting messages about distracted driving that could influence their classmates, schools, and communities across the state. Participants were encouraged to use their creativity, storytelling, and video production skills to raise awareness about the importance of not driving distracted and encouraged their peers to “Take Action Against Distraction.” Five entries won (School size: Class A, Class B, Class C, Class D, and a Spanish speaking entry) and each earned $2,000 for their school, club, or extracurricular activity, providing valuable support for student programs. The 2025 contest concluded in April, but its impact continues to spread—and we encourage students and schools to watch for future opportunities to get involved.
The Issue: From 2014 to 2023, Nebraska had at least 3,000 crashes every year caused by distracted driving, and this number is surely underreported. Motor vehicle traffic incidents are the leading cause of death for those aged 12-19 years old.
The Challenge: We asked Nebraska high school students to Accept the Challenge to Take Action Against Distractions by creating a short, 30 second PSA video. Students were encouraged to be creative (and safe) and issue their own challenge(s) to their peers about distracted driving (the risks, ways to avoid distraction, positive driving habits, etc.).
Winners: 1 PSA was chosen in each high school class (A, B, C, D) plus one Spanish speaking PSA for a total of 5 winners! Each winner received a cash prize of $2,000 for their school/school program and had their PSA showcased on multiple media platforms throughout the State of Nebraska. Winners were chosen based on social media scoring – “shared and liked” ruled!
